Historical reference.

Each Red Army soldier had a gas mask and a gas mask bag. During the war, soldiers of even the same unit could have different bags and gas masks of different types. In general, until 1943, the main gas mask of the Red Army was the 1941 model BS with an MT-4 filter and a ShM-1 helmet-mask.

Gas bags of the 1941 model were put into production in 1942. They were sewn from tarpaulin or fabric with similar characteristics.

There were three options for bags:

1. With two compartments inside (one for the gas mask box, the other for the front part of the gas mask).

2. With three compartments inside (one of them is for the gas mask box, the other is for the front part, the third is for the protective paper cape).

3. With two pockets on the outside on the narrow sides of the bag, and also two or three compartments inside (an individual anti-chemical kit and a sanitary kit were placed in the outside pockets).

The compartment of the bag for the front part of the gas mask was lined with soft material to avoid friction on the tarpaulin. The strap on one side was adjustable in length.

On the side of the bag facing the body, a narrow cord or braid was sewn for fastening to the body when wearing a gas mask in a combat position.

Since the war years passed without chemical attacks, soldiers could sometimes, in violation of the regulations, carry personal belongings in gas mask bags, and they tried to “get rid of” the gas mask itself as an unnecessary item.
