Historical reference.

Grand Cross of the Iron Cross (German: Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes) is the highest military award received by major military leaders for winning a decisive battle. The order was being introduced only with a major military campaign:

  • 1813 war for freedom (Befreiungskrieg),
  • Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871,
  • First World War 1914-1918,
  • World War II 1939-1945.

In 1939, the Grand (or Great) Cross was established by Adolf Hitler's Decree as the highest grade of the Order of the Iron Cross. The Grand Cross was the same shape as the Knight's Cross, but was larger. It was supposed to be worn around the neck on a ribbon of the order's colors.
