Historical reference.

The order was established in 1813 on the birthday of Queen Louise of Prussia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who inspired the German War of Liberation. There were several versions of the order depending on the year of establishment, which was indicated at the bottom of this version of the order (1813, 1870, 1914, 1939).

In 1813, the upper arm of the cross was decorated with the initials of King Frederick William III (FW), and in the central part there was an image of an oak branch.

The 1871 and 1914 versions featured the initials of Kaiser Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II in the center and the symbol of the Prussian royal crown at the top.

In the 1939 version, Adolf Hitler ordered a swastika to be added in the center instead of his initials.
