In the Red Army, two types of buttonholes were used: everyday (colored) and field (protective, introduced in August 1941). In addition, there were differences in the buttonholes of commanders and military leaders.
However, difficulties in supplying the army led to the fact that in combat conditions all variants of insignia were encountered simultaneously in various combinations. In addition, some military leaders refused to wear field insignia. This situation continued until 1943, when shoulder straps were introduced in the Red Army.
