The gold badge was awarded for 50 days of close combat and hand-to-hand fights. On March 26, 1944 Hitler declared his exceptional right to hand the gold Close Combat badge.

However, fifteen months of frontline service was equivalent to a hand-to-hand combat for 15 days. The gold badge was awarded to 631 people during the Second World war.
