Winter campaign medal

Description

German WW2 Russian front 1941/42 medal or "The frozen meat" medal.

Made of white metal with gray patina. Supplied with a length of the correct ribbon.

Historical reference.

The medal received its nickname because of the characteristic dark red color of the ribbon that resembled the color of frostbitten extremities, and secondly, because of the high number of frostbites that period. The original name is Ostmedaille (East medal) or Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten (the medal for the winter campaign in the East).

The medal recipients wore its ribbon in a button-loop of their field jacket next to the ribbon of the iron cross.
