In January 1941, the motorized SS division "Reich" (SS-Division "Reich" (mot.)) appeared. The division was sent to the Balkans.
In March 1941, soldiers entered Hungary and Romania. On the evening of April 12, 1941, SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Fritz Klingenberg, at the head of the reconnaissance patrol of the Reich division, occupied the capital of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and officially (in the presence of a German diplomatic official) took the keys to the city from the mayor of Belgrade.
Next, the division was sent first to Austria, and then to Poland.
To participate in Operation Barbarossa, the division was replenished with men and equipment and became one of the most powerful formations in the German armed forces. The division had 19,020 soldiers and officers. The division attacked the USSR south of Minsk, crossed the Dnieper at Mogilev, and took part in the battles of Yelnya.
Then the SS division "Reich" was transferred to the central sector of the Eastern Front for the offensive on Moscow. She fought at Mozhaysk, Borodino and in the area of Istra. At the end of November 1941, units of the Reich Division were only a few dozen kilometers from Moscow, but the December offensive of the Red Army forced the SS Reich Division, along with other formations of Army Group Center, to begin retreating. By the beginning of winter, it had lost 60% of its personnel. From December 1941 to early March 1942, the SS division "Reich" fought defensive battles in the areas of Istra, Ruza and Rzhev.
Since 1942, she fought in the area of Rzhev. In early July 1942, she was transferred to northwestern France.
Since February 1943, in the southern sector of the Eastern Front (the Third Battle of Kharkov).
On October 22, 1943, the unit was renamed the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Reich" (2. SS-Panzer-Division "Das Reich") (in fact, even before the renaming corresponded to the staff of the panzer division). By the end of 1943, the division was completely depleted.
After the Allied landings in Normandy, the division moved against them. By the end of August, the division, which had suffered huge losses (for example, only 120 men remained in the 4th SS Regiment), retreated to the Coucy area.
In early April 1945, the remnants of the division retreated to Vienna. After several days of bloody fighting, German troops were driven out of Vienna. In April 1945, the division retreated to the Czech Republic, and in May 1945, it surrendered to American troops in Austria.
