In 1918, when the Grand Duchy of Finland became an independent country of Finland, Serdobol was renamed Sortavala. It was one of 6 cities in the Vyborg Governorate of Finland.
After the end of the Winter War in 1940, according to the Moscow Treaty, the city was transferred to the USSR and became part of the newly formed Karelo-Finnish SSR.
